Een groen gekleurde wereld

Vandaag is groen. Het is Saint Patrick's Day.

Global Greening

Wereldwijde line-up #GoGreen4PatricksDay

In Paris, the iconic Sacre Coeur basilica in Montmartre turned emerald for the occasion, and Irish pubs will be filled across the city.

According to the Irish Times, Tourism Ireland spent around €95,000 on “greening” more than 120 buildings and monuments last year, including €8,000 for the Sydney Opera House, €3,000 for the Sphinx and Pyramids in Egypt, €2,570 for South Africa’s Table Mountain, and €2,379 for the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy.

The Shard, Nelson’s Column, the London Eye and the Town Hall clock in Manchester complete the UK list of landmarks going green.

Landmarks taking part in Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening initiative for the first time include Rome’s Colosseum, Edinburgh Castle and the top five floors of the Shard.

The ‘I Amsterdam’ sign in front of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Place de l’Etoile in Beirut, Lebanon were also lit up in green, along with famous landmarks in Great Britain, mainland Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, as well as China, South Korea, India, Brazil and South Africa.

The Vilnia River in Vilnius, Lithuania was dyed green for the celebrations, while the Meridian Line at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich was also decorated green.

Five years ago, the Sydney Opera House was the first global location to go green.

The Minister for Tourism, Paschal Donohoe, said: “The fact that 160 buildings have opted to go green to celebrate St Patrick’s Day this year brings an enormous sense of pride to our people at home and across the world.

“Being able to put ourselves front and centre on the world stage in this way reaps unrivalled dividends in terms of publicity, promoting Ireland and getting the message out about our recovery and the progress we are making.”

The CEO of Tourism Ireland, Niall Gibbons, said: “It’s bigger and better than ever this year, with some famous additions like the Colosseum in Rome, the Sacré Cœur basilica in Paris, Edinburgh Castle, the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, the Place de l’Etoile in Beirut and even the Equator Sign and Line in Uganda.
